Kirby Kean

( 1908 - 1999 )

Kirby A. Kean was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1908. He came to Los Angeles with his family in 1924. He attended the Art Center College of Design where he met a number of photographers such as Herman Wall and Will Connell. He then worked as a photographer’s apprentice for James Doolittle for most of the 1930’s, where he worked for no salary. Mr. Doolittle always bought lunch (martinis, usually) and encouraged Kirby to market his photographs to various publications.
