Bill Avery

Bill Avery was born in Seattle, Washington. Without formal training, he learned photography hands on at Columbia Pictures. During World War II he was a combat cameraman / photographer. Upon his return from the war, he resumed work at Columbia Pictures. Later, after leaving Columbia Pictures, he found work at MGM in the still laboratory for photographer C.S. Bull. He also did magazine photography, shooting publicity layouts of many celebrities including Elvis Presley, Shirley MacLaine, Jack Lemmon, Katharine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn. Bill also covered motion picture studio assignments including Funny Face and To Catch a Thief. The last decade of his career was spent freelancing as a still cameraman for MGM, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Columbia, ABC and CBS.
